David Wechsler and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales

The next development in the history of intelligence testing was the creation of a new measurement instrument by American psychologist David Wechsler (January 12, 1896 – May 2, 1981). It is a much more complicated type of test than a short online quiz and was formed with many sets and subsets.

Older descriptions of the WAIS commonly listed fourteen subtests -- seven verbal (Information, Comprehension, Arithmetic, Similarities, Vocabulary, Digit Span, and Letter-Number Sequencing), and seven performance (Digit Symbol-Coding, Picture Completion, Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, Picture Arrangement, Symbol Search, and Object Assembly).

In the next two chapters, we define these two historical main sets: verbal subtests and performance subtests.

Modern context: The verbal/performance split belongs to older Wechsler editions. Current editions use revised subtests and broader index structures. FreeIQTest.info is an independent IQ-style quiz and is not an official Wechsler assessment.
